Interesting.
Yes,...Just came across this posting.

Interesting.

Yes, the Setul or S'toon Malays are a distinctive ethno-cultural sub-group within the larger Malay World.

Not much affinity with the Patani Malays beyond their common Islamic faith and Malay linguistic roots.

Would the Patani Region ever become another docile, contented, resigned-to-reality Satun? No. The history of the Patani Kingdom and the Setul Principality are different and circumstances that led to the 1902 Siamese annexation of the two regions differ markedly.

In the case of Satun, the minor potentate, Rong Ammarttri Phraya Phuminart Phakdi (Tuanku Baharuddin ibni Al-Marhum Tengku Temenggong) was an active "collaborator" to Siamese machinations on this northern Kedah district and got to keep his "throne" (albeit as a Governor on Siam's books) until his death, while in Patani, the Sultan led the Malay resistance to Siamese rule and ended up being deposed and locked up in Phitsanulok prison for 3 yrs.KijangMashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02617194030300556118noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5434585737383487061.post-68282985418040043052010-01-30T10:40:44.397+08:002010-01-30T10:40:44.397+08:00The hidden spots are always the best. Cambodia dispute that can be made to look like the big bully pushing around its weak neighbour. That plays very well in today's UN and other international institutions to produce sympathy for the underdog. Never mind the useful Preah Vihear sideshow (useful in the sense that it keeps the antagonism going in a case where Cambodia looks to most observers as having more right on its side), there are far more important border disputes remaining to be settled - including maritime boundaries of areas containing large and very valuable gas-fields. Cambodia knows that trying to settle these disputes bilaterally with bigger Thailand is less likely to work in its favour than if an international body can be brought in to arbitrate - itself rather more likely now that the dispute has reached its current level and looks set to stay that way if not get worse.

q) See Siam Report's analysis of Hun Sen's personal and historical axes to grind at: http://siamreport.blogspot.com/2009/11/thaksin-cambodia-thailand-extradition.html

Seems to me that p) and q) are not mutually exclusive - which takes us to an r) "All of the above".Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17440562837397970752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5434585737383487061.post-20216367216379703912009-11-14T12:40:42.413+08:002009-11-14T12:40:42.413+08:00people can say what they please about Hun Sen - (b...people can say what they please about Hun Sen - (brutal dictator, corrupt, ex-Khmer Rouge, no formal education, born penniless, etc.) - but it would be foolish to ignore his intelligence, his political insight, his survival skills and his present and future longevity as the Cambodia leader.

so far, the Thailand side represented by Abhisit and Kasit has been playing a losing game and seems to be flailing about at a loss as to what to do to gain some leverage over Hun Sen whose allies in this game include, among others, China, Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan and Laos.pretoriahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13344128994790513333noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5434585737383487061.post-48858641073722862712009-10-29T12:59:41.648+08:002009-10-29T12:59:41.648+08:00"Ever the statesman, Abhisit on Thursday told..."Ever the statesman, Abhisit on Thursday told journalists he had no hard feelings towards Hun Sen".

Well, that's something of a gloss on Abhisit's peevish and tetchy response to the Cambodian PM's comments. How about the following from Abhisit's ASEAN press conference: "I don't want him [Hun Sen] to be a victim or or a pawn of somebody [Thaksin] that undermines the interests of his country and interests of the region. And I'm sure that when he's better informed, he'll change his mind".

So, in one sentence, the junior (in nearly every sense of the word) Abhisit labels the old hand as both gullible and ignorant. PM Chuan kept on delaying efforts to set up a drafting committee, but PM Chavalit was the one who finally gave it the green light.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5434585737383487061.post-56188990097508700592009-10-03T10:39:04.488+08:002009-10-03T10:39:04.488+08:00........spot on, Phillip, sounds more like a cab r...........spot on, Phillip, sounds more like a cab ride to the airport thru the slums of Oakland, California, to me! Abhisit is being seen as more and more of a "busted flush" by the string-pullers behind the scenes; added to which he has the unfortunate tendency (in their eyes) to tug on his leash a bit too hard and too often - saying things that they really don't want said, even if there's little prospect of him putting much (if any) of it into practice.

Old-hand Suthep knows the score and to whom dues need to be paid (e.g. witness his support for the police chief candidate backed by those in "higher places") - but he has been unable to keep Abhisit sufficiently in check.

Bit by bit, the Democrats' position (in particular Abhisit's) will be undermined until it's made untenable - probably as the deals are done to get the 5-year bans lifted (not for "criminal fugitive Thaksin", of course) as part of the charter amendments. That process in itself will likely pull enough of the present "opposition" MPs into a BJT-led coalition - replacing the lost Democrat votes.

And then? Voila! Say hello to the casting directors' choice for the new lead in the pantomime. A big hand, please, for Khun Newin - who certainly knows how to play the game and can be relied on to give the string-pullers what they want. In return, he'll be granted enough leeway to a] profit handsomely and b] buy/leverage the support he needs to function.

Coups are out - control-by-proxy is here to stay.Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17440562837397970752noreply@blogger.com
